Bratwurst and Mustard with Sauerkraut

Bratwurst and Mustard with Sauerkraut (Serves 1)

Bratwurst is Wisconsin soul food. I have fond memories of the time I spent in Hurley, Wisconsin running the Paavo Nurmi Marathon in 1994 so when I found bratwurst at Whole Foods Market in Georgia recently, I bought some. Real bratwurst is a fresh sausage that must be cooked before eating, but that’s easy. Twenty minutes in hot water and then a few minutes on a hot grill pan to brown and brats are ready to go. I paired mine with sauerkraut and topped it with spicy brown mustard for a high taste, quick prep meal.

Prep and cook time: 30 minutes

Ingredient list:

2 bratwurst
Sauerkraut (look for a brand that includes just sauerkraut and salt – mine was Cortland Valley Organic)
Spicy brown mustard

Directions: Cover two brats with water in a small sauce pan. Bring water to just below a simmer and let brats cook for 20 minutes. Don’t let water boil or the brats may pop. Preheat a non-stick grill pan over high heat. Transfer brats to the hot grill pan with tongs when cooked and turn them every minute or two until they are browned nicely. Meanwhile, heat sauerkraut in a small sauce pan. When ready, lay a bed of sauerkraut on a plate and top with brats. Smear brats with spicy brown mustard. Enjoy!
